The Magic of Waldorf Window Stars: A Craft to Cherish The Magic of Waldorf Window Stars: A Craft to Cherish

Waldorf Window Stars are a delightful and timeless craft that has become a staple in many Waldorf-inspired homes and classrooms. Their intricate folds and vibrant colors bring warmth and light into any room, making them the perfect way to celebrate the changing seasons and add a magical touch to your decor. These stars are typically crafted from kite paper, which, when folded and layered, transforms into a beautiful translucent creation that catches the light in the most enchanting way.

I first encountered the charm of Waldorf Window Stars during my very first job after graduating with my Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma. I worked in a Waldorf preschool, where I quickly learned how these simple yet profound crafts were woven into the daily rhythm of the children’s activities. There was something truly special about watching the children’s faces light up as they folded their paper, carefully creating stars that they would proudly hang in the windows.

Start with a square of kite paper, (I have used 22x22cm) fold it in half and then in half again lengthwise to give yourself 4 equal long thin quarters. Cut off one quarter using a sharp knife and slicing along the crease.

Each point of the star will use one of the quarters of kite paper, you piece of kite paper should look like this.

Fold the piece of kite paper in half lengthways.

Open it out and then fold all four corners into the centre line so your kite paper looks like this.

Next fold the corners into the centre line a second time on both the bottom and top.

And repeat on the other side so your kite paper now looks like this.

Fold the bottom corner into a third time

Repeat on the opposite side.

Fold the bottom section up so your kite paper looks like this.

Then fold both corners into the centre line.  Your first star point is now complete.

Repeat 7 more times.

Then construct your window star by aligning the bottom edge of the star point with the center line of the point you are attaching it to. I prefer to use clear glue stock, but you can use double sided tape or pva if you prefer.

Weave the final star point over and under into the remaining gap, and your star is complete.

The act of folding Waldorf Window Stars is a journey of patience, focus, and creativity. These stars are not only a visual delight but also a tangible way to nurture a child's concentration, fine motor skills, and a sense of accomplishment. Each star reflects a little piece of magic, making them a cherished part of any Waldorf-inspired home.
