About Grapat

Grapat is a family-run company from Spain, born from the simple, joyful observations of childhood play. After the birth of their first child, Lola, the founders noticed how she didn’t need traditional toys to be entertained - her imagination transformed everyday objects into endless worlds of play. Watching her, they realised that being present and offering simple, meaningful materials was what truly mattered.

When their second child, Tomàs, was born, the family moved from the city to the countryside, into the former home of Jordi’s family. Here, life slowed down, and their vision for thoughtful, natural play took root. The family home became both workshop and studio: wooden pieces were shaped in the barn where a donkey had once lived, and each toy was hand-stained in the kitchen where Jordi’s grandmother had cooked for generations. It was here that Grapat, meaning “a handful” in Catalan, came to life - a name that reflects the care with which each set of pieces is held in the hands of children.

Since its beginnings in 2015, Grapat has grown to reach families in over 62 countries, yet it remains firmly a family project. Each piece, from the prototype to the finished toy, is still created with the same love, hand-stained in-house, and designed to support open-ended, imaginative play. Grapat’s toys reflect a way of life - one that values creativity, presence, and connection to the natural world - and this care is felt in every piece we bring to our shop.

We’ve been proud to stock Grapat since 2018, and we have seen firsthand how these toys enrich our own children’s playtime. Many of the products have also become valuable resources within our homeschooling environment, providing tactile, open-ended learning experiences that foster imagination, problem-solving, and independent thinking. Every set, every mandala, every little figure is an invitation for children to explore, experiment, and learn, and a testament to the love and vision that shaped Grapat from the very beginning.

What Are Grapat Toys?

Grapat Rainbow Snow Mandala played with in sand

Grapat toys are beautifully simple wooden play materials designed to encourage open-ended play. Rather than following instructions or fixed outcomes, children are free to explore, experiment, and create their own ideas through play.

Many Grapat sets include small, tactile pieces such as Nins, rings, coins, and mandala elements. These versatile wooden pieces can become anything within a child’s imagination - characters in a story, treasures to sort and count, ingredients in a pretend kitchen, or landscapes for small-world play. Because there is no single “correct” way to use them, children naturally discover new ways to play as they grow.

This open-ended approach allows Grapat toys to support a wide range of developmental skills. Children practise sorting, pattern making, counting, storytelling, and creative thinking, often all within the same play session. The simplicity of the pieces encourages focus and curiosity, inviting children to slow down and explore play at their own pace.

For many families, Grapat toys become long-lasting resources that evolve alongside a child’s interests, returning again and again in new forms of imaginative play.

Grapat Mis and Match Bloom

Grapat toys are designed around the principles of loose parts play, a theory that emphasizes the value of open-ended, creative, and child-led play experiences. • Problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity
  • Social skills, collaboration, and cooperative play
  • Adaptability and resilience through experimentation
  • Child-led learning with versatile, tactile materials

By incorporating loose parts into everyday play, Grapat encourages children to develop independence, creativity, and cognitive skills while having fun. Every piece is designed to inspire curiosity, experimentation, and limitless possibilities, making play both meaningful and joyful.

Spiel Gut Awarded Grapat Toys – Recognized for Creativity and Quality

child playing with Grapat Mis and Match set

Many Grapat toys have received the respected Spiel Gut Seal - a highly regarded European award given to toys that demonstrate exceptional play value, thoughtful design, and genuine engagement for children.

Unlike many awards that focus on popularity or trends, the Spiel Gut distinction is based on careful, independent testing. Toys are evaluated by educators, child development specialists, families, and children themselves. Each toy is assessed for quality, safety, durability, environmental responsibility, and most importantly, how meaningfully children interact with it during play.

Grapat’s simple, open-ended wooden pieces lend themselves beautifully to this kind of exploration. Children return to them again and again - creating intricate mandalas, building small-world scenes, sorting colours and shapes, or inventing their own stories and games. It is this depth of imaginative engagement that has helped many Grapat toys earn the Spiel Gut recognition.

For families looking for toys that truly support creativity, independent thinking, and long-lasting play, the Spiel Gut seal offers reassuring recognition of thoughtful design and genuine play value. You can explore our Grapat Spiel Gut Award Winning Toys collection to discover these carefully recognised pieces.

Over the years, many of these award-winning toys have become firm favourites in both our shop and our own home, returning again and again in new forms of play as children grow, their ideas expand, and their creativity continues to unfold.

Grapat’s Vision and Soul

Nature and childhood are at the very heart of everything Grapat creates. It’s clear that every piece is inspired by the rhythms of the natural world and by children’s innate curiosity and creativity. Grapat’s philosophy is simple but profound: to provide open-ended play materials that invite children to explore, imagine, and create without instructions, limits, or judgement.

Each set is carefully designed to let a child’s imagination lead the way. The shapes, colours, and textures encourage storytelling, patterning, building, and pretend play - all in a tactile, hands-on way. The natural forms of the wood are preserved and distilled to their essence, so the pieces are versatile and ready to transform into whatever a child envisions.

In stocking Grapat, we’ve seen firsthand how these toys support independent thinking, problem-solving, and focus, while also nurturing a sense of calm, wonder, and connection to the natural world. Every piece embodies a respect for childhood, encouraging moments of play that are free, joyful, and deeply meaningful. Grapat’s motto - “be free, play open!” - shines through in every set, making each toy not just an object, but an invitation to explore, create, and grow.

Why Families Love Grapat Toys

Flatlay of Grapat Moonlight Tales wooden playset

Many families are drawn to Grapat toys because they support a style of play that is simple, imaginative, and child-led. Rather than directing children toward a specific outcome, Grapat’s open-ended pieces encourage exploration, allowing play to unfold naturally through curiosity and creativity.

The small wooden elements can be used in countless ways. Children might sort and count them, build patterns and mandalas, create characters for storytelling, or incorporate them into small-world scenes. Because there are no instructions or fixed roles, the pieces adapt easily to different stages of development, growing with children as their interests and abilities evolve.

Families also appreciate the calm, tactile quality of the natural wood and nature-inspired colours. The pieces invite slower, more thoughtful play and often blend beautifully with other wooden toys, loose parts, and small-world environments already present in the home.

Over time, many parents find that Grapat toys return again and again to children’s play - reappearing in new games, stories, and discoveries as imagination continues to unfold.

Sustainable Materials

Wood is at the heart of every Grapat toy - warm, tactile, and full of life. Its natural textures, subtle irregularities, and unique grains make each piece beautifully individual, inviting children to explore, touch, and create. Over time, small dents and marks tell the story of hours spent in imaginative, open-ended play, a sign that these toys are fulfilling their purpose.

Each piece is made using traditional methods and sustainably sourced materials from within the EU. The hand-applied, water-based stains highlight the natural beauty of the wood while connecting children to the colors of the natural world. Variations in temperature, humidity, and even wind create slight differences in each finish, giving every toy its own authentic character.

Finally, vegetable-based oils and waxes are used to protect the wood, leaving a subtle aroma that softens over time. Every detail reflects a dedication to sustainability, careful craftsmanship, and play experiences that nurture creativity, imagination, and sensory exploration.

Sustainability and Certifications

Grapat toys are thoughtfully crafted with both children and the planet in mind. The dyes used are water-based and non-toxic, giving each piece vibrant, natural colours that may vary slightly - much like nature itself. The wood comes from sustainably managed forests and carries the PEFC 14-35-00485 certification, while finishes are created using vegetable-based waxes and oils. Many products include cotton bags made from fabrics certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and all packaging is 100% plastic-free. Even the sturdy boxes are designed to last for years, becoming an integral part of the toy experience. Most items are made from a single piece of wood, though some require assembly using glue that is completely formaldehyde-free. Every product is manufactured and rigorously tested to meet European (EN71 1–2-3), American (ASTM), and ISO8124 toy safety standards. To keep the toys at their best, they should be stored in a cool, dry place and cleaned gently with a damp cloth, avoiding immersion in water or harsh disinfectants. This careful attention ensures that Grapat toys are safe, durable, and environmentally responsible — ready to inspire open-ended play for years to come.

Grapat’s Philosophy

Printers tray filled with Grapat Loose parts

Grapat’s philosophy is rooted in a slower, more intentional way of living - one that values childhood, creativity, and a deep connection to nature. Their toys are designed to honour the natural curiosity of children, offering simple, open-ended wooden play materials that invite exploration, imagination, and discovery. Rather than guiding play with instructions or expectations, Grapat pieces encourage children to invent their own games, stories, and worlds, allowing creativity to unfold naturally.

This thoughtful approach reflects Grapat’s wider values of slow, conscious living and respect for the rhythms of childhood. Each set is created to support free play, where children can experiment, build, sort, create patterns, and develop their own ideas without limits. By keeping the materials simple and versatile, the toys remain adaptable to a child’s evolving interests and stages of development.

The name Grapat itself reflects this philosophy. In Catalan - the native language of the region where the company was founded - Grapat means “a handful.” The idea behind the name is beautifully simple: to hold a small handful of loose pieces with care and intention, and to offer them with the same love into the hands of children. It is this spirit of simplicity, creativity, and respect for childhood that lies at the heart of every Grapat toy.

We stock a wide range of Grapat toys, including mandala sets, Nins, seasonal collections, loose parts, and small-world play resources. You can browse our full range of Grapat wooden toys here.
