Silicone Quality
Our silicone is LFGB Approved (LFGB Grade). The LFGB Standard is a stricter, more rigorous set of testing guidelines used to determine the quality and safety of the silicone. A third party lab verifies that we meet these requirements.
The LFBG (Lebensmittel-, Bedarfsgegenstände-und Futtermittelgesetzbuch, or “Foods, Consumer Goods and Feedstuffs Code”) is the German enactment of European law as operated by the Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR). The BfR recommendations for food-contact materials are some of the more comprehensive in the EU.
A Loving Note About Silicone + Dishwashers
Silicone should not be washed in the dishwasher, as silicone is naturally porous and can absorb flavours and odours from detergent. This often results in a lingering soapy taste that later transfers into anything you cook or store in the silicone. For this reason, it is advised that all silicone items be hand washed only to prevent detergent absorption. If your silicone has already picked up unwanted smells or flavours, you can remove them by heating it in the oven at 180 °C for 30 minutes, which helps burn off the trapped residue. Alternatively, soaking the items in vinegar or a baking-soda solution will help neutralize and eliminate the odour, restoring the silicone to a clean, neutral state.
Care Instructions
PlanetBox compartments wipe down easily with a sponge and mild (phosphate-free, chlorine bleach-free) soap and water. You may also clean your lunch box in the dishwasher. Be sure to remove the magnets before washing your PlanetBox so that the magnets stay dry and don't cause the box to rust.
Always remove the magnets from the top of your PlanetBox lid before cleaning your lunchbox. Try storing the magnets on the refrigerator until your PlanetBox is clean and completely dry.
What if rust spots appear?
We understand that you want your PlanetBox to look spot free so we’d like to explain where spots can come from, why they are harmless and how you can remove them.
COMMON CAUSES
1) Detergents that contain bleach or sodium hypochlorite can cause pitting that “eats away” at stainless steel.
2) Foreign material can attach itself to the container and then start to corrode. This happens when the stainless steel is washed with other carbon steel items such as sharp kitchen knives and rusty baking pans.
3) If the magnets get wet, the lunch box lid will rust and the magnets will degrade leaving material behind. This occurs if your box is wet or damp when you place the magnets on the lid. What can be done to fix this is cleaning off the rust, switching to a new set of magnets and always making sure the lid is completely dry before applying the magnets.
CLEANING RUST OFF THE CONTAINER
There are no coatings on our containers. Please try using any of the following methods to remove spots:
1) Fine Steel Wool: Start by washing the container under running water. Use Super Fine Steel Wool (#000 is one such ranking) and start by lightly buffing the spotted area. Often it just takes a few strokes under light pressure to remove the spots. If that doesn’t do it, proceed to work the surface harder with the steel wool pad. Rinse with running water as you are working and very quickly you’ll have removed the spots.
or
2) Baking Soda and Water Paste: Make a thick paste of baking soda and water. Apply it to the area that needs to be cleaned. Leave the paste on for an hour and then scrub off and rinse with soap and water.
or
3) Lemon Juice and Salt: Cover the rusted areas with salt and then squeeze fresh lemon juice (stay away from bottled lemon juice, you want juice from a real lemon) over the layer of salt. Don’t discard the used lemon. Let the salt and lemon mixture sit for about two hours, then use the lemon rind as a scrubber to remove the rust. If there are particularly stubborn rust stains, break out the steel wool, a scouring pad, or a wire brush. When done, rinse off the lemon juice, salt, and rust residue, and dry the metal item thoroughly.
