Grapat Perpetual Calendar
The Grapat Perpetual Calendar is a beautifully tactile, hands-on tool that helps children explore the passage of time in a meaningful and playful way. Designed as an active manipulative, it allows children to experience days, months, and seasons through touch and interaction, bringing abstract concepts to life in a sensory, engaging format.
This carefully crafted calendar includes twelve Nins® in twelve vibrant colours, aligned with Waldorf-inspired pedagogy to represent each month and its corresponding season. A natural beech wood bowl holds the figures, while two beech cubes display the days, and a segmented wooden platform marks the four seasons and months of the year. Together, these elements allow children to explore sequencing, observation, and temporal rhythms through gentle, open-ended play.
Children can move the Nins® to track the current day, arrange them according to the month, and explore seasonal changes visually and tactically. The act of placing each piece encourages concentration, hand-eye coordination, and a sense of responsibility, while also fostering imaginative storytelling and creative exploration. The calendar can be used independently or incorporated into broader small-world or loose-parts play, making it a versatile resource for both learning and imaginative engagement.
Handmade from sustainably sourced European wood and finished with non-toxic, water-based dyes, the Grapat Perpetual Calendar is designed to endure years of daily use. Its natural materials and open-ended approach reflect Grapat’s philosophy of supporting thoughtful, slow childhood play and encouraging children to explore at their own pace.
