Grimm's 10 piece Counting Rainbow
The Grimm’s 10-Piece Counting Rainbow is a captivating wooden toy that introduces children to the abstract world of numbers through open-ended, sensory play. Made from sustainably sourced lime wood and glazed with non-toxic water-based colours, the ten curved arches encourage children to explore, stack, sort, and discover numerical concepts naturally. Each arch invites independent experimentation, allowing children to learn through hands-on experience rather than guided instruction.
Unlike traditional educational toys, the Counting Rainbow does not have numbers or fractions marked on it. Its intention is to provide materials that stimulate free play, enabling children to explore counting, sequencing, and numerical relationships in many different ways. Through tactile, visual, and auditory exploration, children develop early numeracy skills, logical thinking, and problem-solving abilities while engaging in joyful, imaginative play.
Explore Numbers Through Play
Children can stack the arches, line them up by size or colour, or combine them in creative ways to explore quantities and relationships. By experimenting with which pieces fit together and how, they begin to understand basic number concepts, sequencing, and patterns intuitively.
As the child’s understanding grows, the rainbow can become a tool for inventive mathematical play. Arches can be combined to create towers, arches, tunnels, or small-world constructions while subtly reinforcing number sense and spatial reasoning. The tactile, wooden texture adds another layer of sensory learning, making abstract concepts tangible and engaging.
Unique, Handcrafted Design
The Counting Rainbow is hand-sawn from a single piece of wood, creating subtle asymmetry and natural charm. Individual arches may need to be rotated slightly for a perfect fit—a feature that makes every rainbow unique and adds to its appeal. Natural variations in grain, knots, and colour are expected and celebrate the beauty of wood, creating a warm, sensory-rich experience that plastic or metal cannot replicate.

Marble Runs and Multi-Sensory Play
The 10-Piece Counting Rainbow pairs beautifully with Grimm’s wooden balls, creating opportunities for marble runs, auditory experiments, and STEM-inspired play. Children can use arches on their sides to make tracks or turn them upside down to enjoy the melodic sound of balls rolling down the centre. This multi-sensory approach encourages problem-solving, perseverance, and critical thinking while blending mathematical discovery with imaginative play.
Tips for Thoughtful Play
For the most versatile and creative play, keep the arches loose in a basket rather than pre-assembled. This allows children to see the pieces as flexible building materials, fostering imagination and independent problem-solving. The rough texture of the stained wood also makes stacking, sliding, and balancing easier, enhancing both tactile and cognitive learning experiences.
Recommended for children aged 3+, though approved for 0+, the Grimm’s 10-Piece Counting Rainbow is celebrated for its educational value, sensory benefits, and open-ended design. It is part of Grimm’s world of numbers, a thoughtful approach to learning numeracy through hands-on exploration rather than rigid instruction.
For UK parents and caregivers seeking sustainable, mindful toys, this wooden counting rainbow provides years of open-ended play, tactile discovery, and early mathematical exploration, all while highlighting the beauty and sensory richness of natural materials.
About Grimm's
Grimm's toys are inspired by the principles of Waldorf Steiner and are designed with the intention of helping children discover and develop their own creativity through simplicity of shapes, leaving plenty of room for independent play and imagination. Inspired by the educational philosophies of Rudolf Steiner, Grimm's puzzles, building sets, and toys are about the rainbow, happy colors, creativity, and the imagination. There are no instructions, and you can do no wrong with a Grimm's toy. Just play, learn, and enjoy. Read more in our Grimm’s guide.
Please note: as Grimm's uses non-lacquered wood, some paint transfer can occur during play. This is considered normal. Non-lacquered wood has a lovely texture - the rough texture of the stained wood is not only an important tactile sensory experience for children, but those rough surfaces makes it possible to build in many different ways, because the parts do not slide down so easily as the wood surface is still natural and not covered with a layer of bright enamel; however if you are concerned about paint transfer we suggest you purchase another item that is lacquered to be on the safe side.
